Bounty Hunters and Setbacks

The FINAL Star Wars Miniature showed up in the mail today.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Greedo, who's role on the board is that of Imperial Knight.

In a less happy development, yesterday was a bit of a setback. I started work on The Hulk's eyes and it went...sideways. The more I tried to correct, the more paint I used, meaning the more detail I lost. Eventually, the eyes looked ok but the rest of the face was mushy looking. I lost all the great detail in the nose and lips.

So, I stripped the face back to bare metal.
I'd rather paint him 10 times from scratch than settle for a half-assed job.

I promised to document every step. That includes my screw ups!

New figures, comparisons and touches.

On a quiet Saturday, I had time to make a start on two new figures, The Scorpion and Dr. Doom. Note that the same base of Medium Green darkened with brown works for these two just as it did for the Hulk. Each will naturally get more layers and the "direction" of the green will be different than the Hulk, but it's convenient to re-use previously mixed colours, so I do. The scorpion will stay "browner" while Doc Doom goes more "real" green. Just the front, since the backs aren't that interesting.

Flash off.

Flash on.

For comparison, I popped the Hulk into a shot. Flash off.

Flash on.

Also for comparison, since Newbie mentioned that it was surprising that the Hulk and the Thing were the "large" figures, here's the smallest one, Yoda.

Minor touch up to the Hulk's face around the eyes, plus I painted his hair dark green. It gets a bunch of lovely highlights before his "do" is done. Further, a very light over all dry brush with that same darker green to dull down a few of the too bright areas.

Wet brushing?

In this "layer" I've attacked in several directions. Some drybrushing, some highlights and even the first (sloppy looking) white layer in the eyes. This is probably the most difficult part of the figure to get right, particularly in the case of the Thing, where the mold is less than great in the eye area. It'll take several touches to get it right, but I'll get it eventually. It's one of the most noticable things to go wrong in most figures and I haven't done this in a while, so I'm re-learning my techniques. Fear not, gentle reader, the eyes will look better than today's post might lead you to believe.

The Thing, whites of his eyes, another layer of white on the belt, very light drybrush of white over the "speedo" and even lighter over the rest of him. Standard views.

The Hulk, whites of eyes, dry brush white on the fringes of his pants. Also a technique of my own (never seen it in any "paint miniatures" manual or article) I call "wet" brushing. Basically, drybrush with a lighter colour (Very light green in this case) then while it's still wet take a darker colour, mix it in with the lighter and drybrush again, blending the colours together. I think it gives more natural tones.
